President's Message from Joanne Darling
$40 for Political Survival
Are you aware that there are discussions currently taking place in Congress to eliminate or drastically alter the mortgage interest tax deduction for home owners? Did you know that Congress is in discussions to discontinue certain FHA programs? And that cancellation of these programs would force ALL homebuyers to bring "20% down" to buy a home? Do you believe there are discussions in Congress to disband Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, potentially eliminating the 30 year mortgage? ... ALL True!
I ask you, would you be a successful real estate professional if these discussions turned into YOUR reality?
To combat these threats, the National Association of REALTORS® recently announced their proposal to adopt The REALTOR® Party Political Survival Initiative. In brief, the proposal is to protect these long standing home ownership initiatives by expanding NAR's political advocacy at the National, State, and local levels funded by a member dues increase of $40.
As I'm sure you will agree, in these difficult times a $40 dues increase is tough to imagine. To do nothing however, would have a much greater impact on all of us who have chosen real estate as our profession.
The NAR Midyear Conference is next week (May 9 - 14). During the conference there will be a vote on implementing the initiative and the dues increase proposal.
I encourage all of you to follow these links to learn all that you can about the Political Survival Initiative:
